Why I Stopped Running Outside in the Winter and Head to the Treadmill Instead - Ironman Training Week 8 & Week 9

Writer: Jackie LaiJackie Lai

Jan 27 to Jan 29 - Day 50 to Day 52:

Season Affective Disorder is still here....

Thursday, Jan 30 - Day 53:

Starting to feel like myself again. Did the 45 minutes of Vo2 max at Bike Doctor. It was hard to get back into but happy to get back into training again.

Jan 31 to Feb 1 - Day 54 to Day 55:

My head was not in it to win it. Didn't train, but I did do some gentle yoga. It felt good.

Sunday, Feb 2 - Day 56:

It feels like I am finally on the other side of the low. Planned my distance training for the race today and headed to the treadmill for a 5.5km run.

Monday, Feb 3 - Day 57:

Hopped onto Zwift for a 20km distance bike. The bike course elevation gain for Ironman Ottawa is 323m. I am picking the flattest route here😂

Tuesday, Feb 4 - Day 58:

Head to the pool for a 1km steady swim. I miss swimming so much. So happy to be back in the pool!

Wednesday, Feb 5- Day 59:

Rest day. Can't built too quickly, especially after 3 weeks of doing nothing.

Thursday, Feb 6 - Day 60:

I was planning to bike the 45min Vo2 Max at Bike Doctor before I coach that cycle and yoga class. However, I am the race director for the Dead Cold running happening on Sunday. I had to run around town get all the supplies and ran out of time to do the workout before coaching.

Friday, Feb 7 - Day 61:

Distance run. 6km on the treadmill.

Decided to try listening to a podcast instead of music. Landing on Mel Robins Podcast and learned a few things!

Saturday, Feb 8 - Day 62:

Morning swim before the day starts

1.2km working on drills and paddle swim. If you paddle swim, I HIGHLY recommend getting your swim techniques down pad before using paddles. It helps prevent shoulder injuries.

Sunday, Feb 9 - Day 63:

It was a big day race directing the Dead Cold Run in the morning. You know what's the worst nightmare for a race director during the race... When you are missing an athlete!😬 We thought an athlete went missing! We send people searching everywhere. When we called their emergency contact, it turned out this person had decided to quit the race, went home and didn't tell anyone. So, for any athletes out there, please let a volunteer know if you decide to drop out of the event.

When home and relax before doing my 30km distance bike.

There are 25 weeks to go till Ironman Ottawa. Distance building here I come!

Until then,

Fill your jar with the things you love to do!

And keep being you, the world needs more you!🌻❤️
